Do you know how your laptop came into being? If not, here’s a rather interesting history about its origins. The first portable computer was built during 1981. It was named Osborne. It was a clumsy, heavy contraption, and did not resemble the laptops of today, yet it was a major breakthrough in technology because it proved that computers could be portable.

Two years later, along came the Compaq Portable. Although hardly portable by today’s standards, and almost as heavy as the Osborne, it was the first IBM duplicate. This computer was able to run off MS-DOS but it required electricity.

The first laptop that came close to the ones we are familiar with today was the GriD Compass 1101, designed by Bill Moggridge, and released during 1982. This computer was housed in a magnesium case which is similar to the clam shell casings that we see on modern laptops.

Another two laptops that are worth a mention in this era were the Gavilan SC and the Sharp PC-5000, especially the Gavilan which was the first to be marketed using the word ‘laptop’. Ballpoint pens can be tough on the fingers. Paint-markers are messy and have a nauseating odor to them. There are many reasons to buy used computers rather than new ones. While it is true than in many cases you should buy new electronics, this does not always apply to computers. Computers are a species all their own and you should keep that in mind while shopping. Before you buy a new computer read my reasons for buying a used computer.

Refurbished is another term for used. The difference is that these have at least been tested by professionals and possibly redone as well. You can usually count on them at least having a fresh installation of the operating system when you receive them. With these you can usually be sure they will be in good working condition when you receive them. A lot of these also come with at least a limited warranty.

While most used computers will be in good working condition, it is still advisable to test them before renting computers. If you are buying online and no warranty is offered then you should be very careful about what you buy. Don’t be afraid to ask questions so you know what you will be getting. It’s important that you will be happy with your purchase. It’s also a good idea to know you will be getting everything you need. You may find it is much cheaper to buy the monitor and tower together rather than separately.  Read more...

Only five years ago laptops were considered a pretty hefty expense, with even a mid range system averaging over $1400. Nowadays, cheap laptops can be found all over.

How things have changed! You not only can find excellent buys in the under $750 range, these are pretty powerful models that do pretty much everything you could possibly want. Even these “cheap laptops” have at least 3 gigs of RAM usually, and most come equipped with build in web cams and wireless cards.

Even a more powerful laptop can still be had for about $600 – still pretty cheap in the scheme of things. Add a manufacture’rs rebate or a great sale, and you are definitely ahead of the game.

Some stores even sell refurbs – models that have been traded in or even returned for some reason. These are for all intents and purposes brand new. They still have their original full warranty but they might have a tiny scratch on the case or they might be running XP instead of Vista (which for some people is an absolute dream come true!).  Read more...
