If you are a pet owner and your pet is either a cat or a dog you probably already know these things. Most of the time pet owners tend to forget how important these things are so I am here to remind you.

* Amount of exercise: Both cats and dogs need physical activity. Movement is vital to any pet and the larger pet the more exercise is needed. That is why dogs will often require more exercise than cats.

* Way to exercise: If your cat is a stay at home cat you will need to take it out into nature. If you live in a big city you must take it for daily walks. All dogs (even the smaller ones) will need at least one daily walk and for larger breeds you need two or three walks a day of at least 30 minutes.

*Excess for is bad: Be sure not to overfeed your pet. Most cats and smaller dogs will only eat when they are hungry will many larger breed dogs will eat whatever you put in front of them and they can’t stop until the food is gone.  Read more...

The number of types of pet supplies is as unlimited as the different types of pets you can have. You should do research on what you need and why. Then talk to an associate at a pet store. If you already know why you need certain things, you can then make sure you are not talked into buying something you do not need.

One thing to keep in mind is that any good pet store that is truly pet friendly will give you a discount on your supplies if your pet is a rescue. They do this to decrease the number of animals that need to be put down at a shelter. Some stores have been known to give certain items for free or give up to eighty percent off all of your costs.

Though you may want to buy all sorts of ridiculous toys for the new addition to your family, try to keep it to the basics. You have no idea what this animal is even going to like. If you have recently got a cute new pet in the shape of a kitten or cat then you are going to have to know how to housetrain them. There is nothing worse than finding cat litter all over your floor and in hidden places. It is important to start the training as early as possible, litter tray and toilet training cats can be a very long process, you will require patience and resilience.

Initially you will need to buy a litter tray. This needs to be of a size in which the cat can comfortably turn around. It should be put in a room in the house which is easy for the cat to access as well as being private and out of the way. You should not place the tray in the same room as which the cat sleeps or eats; they are clean animals just like we are. Another consideration is that the litter tray may produce odours.

If your cat has never used a litter tray before then it is important to give them some time to get use to it. Any cat can be trained given enough time. If you plan to toilet train your cat then it is a lot quicker if you have a spare bathroom.  Read more...

Animal communication can be a great benefit to all pet owners. The ability to understand your animals feelings and perspective on life will help you create well balanced and happy animals. It can be very easy to observe our animals behaviour and to place our own judgements on why they behave the way they do, but what happens if you are wrong? Animal communication is a way of truly understanding and getting closer to your animal.

It is very easy for us humans to place negative feelings on to our animals. I am sure that you will agree with me that it is a horrible feeling when some one makes false judgements about us. So why is it any different when we do the same to our animals!

For example the other day I saw how a dog had been labelled as a bully with other dogs. This strong judgement had been made because the owner had observed that when her dog was around younger or gentle dogs, she would look very friendly but when she got close would snap at them and show aggressive signs.

Her behaviour was completely different to nervous or protective dogs where she would leave them well alone.  Read more...
